How to Use Curtain Holdbacks

Curtain holdbacks look elegant along windows dressed in any style, whether you prefer curtains and window treatments that look traditional or contemporary. Find out how to use curtain holdbacks.

  1. First: Select your holdbacks

Choose a set of curtain holdbacks large enough to contain your curtains. Curtain holdbacks come in two main styles, a simple post or a hook; a post may not suffice if you have voluminous curtains or multiple layers. While the holdbacks do not have to perfectly match the curtain rod, they do look good in a similar color or a similar finish.

  2. Second: Measure the location of the holdbacks

While no one could set an across-the-board rule for how high you should install your holdbacks, a good rule of thumb suggests a distance of 36" to 40" from the floor for longer, floor-length styles of curtains, or 12" to 14" from the bottom of a shorter curtain that does not go all the way to the floor. Before you attach the holdbacks, have someone hold them up at the desired height, take a step back and see if you like them at that height. The holdback should attach at least two to four inches from the inner edge of the window.

  3. Third: Attach the holdbacks

Use the screws and instructions provided with your holdbacks to attach them to the wall.

  4. Fourth: Use the holdbacks

Now you can use your holdbacks to pull your curtains back around your window. Just tuck the inner edge into the holdback and push the curtain into place.
